Army body composition calculator (waist-to-height ratio)

The Army's body composition standard is a waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) below 0.55. Divide your waist measurement by your height — both in the same units, so inches by inches or centimetres by centimetres. A ratio of 0.55 or greater means enrollment in the Army Body Composition Program and a flag.

Work out your ratio

Enter a waist and a height in the same units to see your ratio.

Where the 0.55 comes from

ARMY DIR 2026-13 Current · dated 2026-07-01, paragraph 3a, page 1:

“The standard is a WHtR of less than and not equal to 0.55.”

The same paragraph discontinues the height and weight screening tables and bars the circumference-based tape test as a way of challenging a WHtR result. If you have been sent to a chart or a tape, that is the previous standard.

What the directive does not settle: it fixes the ratio and the cutoff but leaves implementing guidance to Army G-1, so the exact tape placement for the waist measurement is not specified in the directive itself. Measure as your unit directs; the arithmetic here is the part the directive controls. Read the full picture on the standards page.
